11. Mainstream V Indie ; One Direction V Lanterns on the Lake

This is my Powtoon presentation on the comparison of a mainstream band and a Indie band. I have looked at One Direction and Lanterns on the Lake.

Questions:

I think advantages of being signed to an independent label is that it gives you more freedom to perform music that you want and you have more say and choice in how your career goes. A disadvantage however is that a independent record label may not elevate the band as much. A mainstream bad may be more likely to become successful.

Advantages of being signed to a mainstream label is that your music will be played more often on radio and in the public which may help popularity and helping create a larger target audience. A disadvantage however, may be you can be seen as controlled and manufactured sometimes. Some people may see less talent in the artist as more is done for them than a independent label.

I think merchandise and ancillary products are important for artist's success because the more people who buy your music and listen to our album will eventually buy other products of the artist such as their merchandise. I do think however that tours and shows are more helpful to a artist's success because that is what really helps them make their money.

Fans of the bands can find information about them on their official websites and social media. One direction's website is bigger and better laid out compared to Lanterns on the lake. They also have more followers and likes on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and more subscribers to their YouTube.

In my opinion, I'd like to be signed to both labels. If I was more focused on music and wanted a career for the idea of music and just performing my talents I would choose an Indie label because they may help me to show my potential more. However, if I was just focused on making money and becoming mainstream and famous world-wide, I would choose a mainstream label as they will do more of the hard work for me and help me to reach to different destinations further.
