This is a link to my Haiku Deck PowerPoint which summaries the main points of the Laura Mulvey theory.
Below are the 2 videos that I feel give the best understanding of Laura Mulvey's theory on representation with a short explanation.
I feel this video is a good understanding of Laura Mulvey's theory on representation. I feel this because here Nicki Minaj is seen as a 'dismembered' woman. This is because the camera often focuses on her body parts such as her small waist, boobs and bum. The video is trying to send across the message that women are just objects to the male gaze which fully supports the Mulvey theory on representation.
These images are screenshots from the Anaconda video which support the Laura Mulvey theory on representation that all women are dismembered and are not focused on as a whole. It also shows that women are just seen as objects in media to a male dominating society.
I also think Laura Mulvey's theory works well for Katy Perry's California Gurls because from the video, the audience can clearly see that the image of the artist has been carefully planned out. The audience are able to see that the choice of clothes have been picked specifically for the theme of the song and video. Her hair and attire in general has also been chosen especially for the purpose of the song. This is helpful because as an audience we will now follow this representation and this will help us to become familiar with the type of artist and genre we are looking at from the video.
Both the images back up Mulvey's theory that artists clothe choices and prop choices are very carefully planned out in music videos.
