3. What is a Music Video?

The Purpose of Music Video

In class I defined a music video to be a visually appealing set of shots depicting a visual atmosphere that can either correlate to the lyrics or beat of a song. Although this artistic direction is integrated within the main purpose of the video which is to sell the artist in question it is incredibly important for a music video to be enjoyable for the predicted audience watching.

In business terms however, the purpose of these types of videos is to call upon the audience watching to purchase that very song they are listening to as well as future songs as well as merchandise and live performance/tour tickets.

Although it is not nearly as simple as it sounds. For this to operate a music video must also be definable as “good”. This means that it must be nothing but memorable, this can range from a relation to a certain level of nostalgia or emotion for a listener to simply being brought up in their head throughout the day. Therefore once a catchy song is brought up in their head the music video that is paired with it can also be identified as a tag for that song. Then if only the video can be remembered so can the song, and more merchandise will be sold.
