The common shot types in the video are probably the close-ups and medium close-ups of the artists (Charlie and I), and also the prop (instrument). We used the close-ups mainly when it was time for the artists to sing in the song, and the base tracks in this video are the close-ups of me when I'm in the park and walking with the prop, as well as Charlie's front and side close-ups. The basic structure in the video is that the close-ups prepare the audience to expect that person to sing next in the song, and when we see the establishing shots in the beginning, it tells the audience that there is a build up - an instrumental part, before the song actually starts.
We went out to look for spacious places to film, meaning this video is not focused on the lyrics, and is a Disjuncture.
We edited the video to some of the prominent beats in the song, and the in the first 15 seconds the traffic lights count down to when I begin signing the first verse, so we have incorporated parts of mise-en-scene to aid the song's rhythm. There are also a lot transitions throughout the video which suggest Charlie and I are singing at the same time/ in sync.
Because I was outside, it was hard for me to sing the lyrics load enough to hear in playback, which made putting in markers harder for the group in post-production, however we did a good job in placing them either way, as it looks like I'm signing in sync for the most part.

12. Lip Sync Project
This was our groups preliminary task of the song XX 'You got the love' We enjoyed making this as it prepared us for what is to come when we do our real music video and helped us to prepare skills we'll need and to help us become more confident in front of camera.
We enjoyed filming this project :)
3. What is a Music Video?
The Purpose of Music Video
In class I defined a music video to be a visually appealing set of shots depicting a visual atmosphere that can either correlate to the lyrics or beat of a song. Although this artistic direction is integrated within the main purpose of the video which is to sell the artist in question it is incredibly important for a music video to be enjoyable for the predicted audience watching.
In business
terms however, the purpose of these types of videos is to call upon the
audience watching to purchase that very song they are listening to as well as
future songs as well as merchandise and live performance/tour tickets.
Although it
is not nearly as simple as it sounds. For this to operate a music video must
also be definable as “good”. This means that it must be nothing but memorable,
this can range from a relation to a certain level of nostalgia or emotion for a
listener to simply being brought up in their head throughout the day. Therefore
once a catchy song is brought up in their head the music video that is paired
with it can also be identified as a tag for that song. Then if only the video
can be remembered so can the song, and more merchandise will be sold.
2. Summer Work Storyboard
These are my storyboard sheets from my summer work which was a shot by shot drawing storyboard of One Direction's 'Drag me down' video. There was six sheets worth of shots and a total of 36 shots just in the first minute..
There was different types of shots also such as close ups, extreme close ups, lots of mid shots and far shots, tracking shots and many other types of shots.

5. Carol Vernallis Summary (with examples)
Carol Vernallis Summary on EDITS
- Edits are very frequent in clips of a music video compared to a film
- The edits often follow the song in some way
- Edits often serve the purpose of adding something exciting to the video
- The video tends to have jump cuts and master/base cuts
Examples:
The jump cuts (cuts that have left out a few seconds in real time) serve a good purpose of keeping the video to the point, and shows the audience the most exciting/relevant parts in the video:
The special effect in this video, which is mainly CGI, shows the audience how quirky and how fun and youthful Katy Perry is as an artist. It's grabs our attention because the animations happen at random points in the video and we want to see what happens next, since it hasn't got a consistent narrative.
We see a lot these close ups of the song artist throughout the video, and sometimes it cuts to this shot to mirror the beat of the song
We see a few of these close-ups as well, though some of the clips where she is spinning on the board are further distance shots.

As you can see, the whole song is in slow motion:
Usually, slow motion is used in Soul/Blues/Love Songs or for effect if someone is moving fast or doing something exciting in a clip of the music video.
Special Effect Editing - This Is How We Do - Katy Perry

Use of Base Track & Repetition of Close Ups - Problem - Ariana Grande ft. Big Sean
We see a lot these close ups of the song artist throughout the video, and sometimes it cuts to this shot to mirror the beat of the song
We see a few of these close-ups as well, though some of the clips where she is spinning on the board are further distance shots.
The whole video is made out of base tracks, as it is shot in a studio, however we notice the video comes back to this clip of a featuring artist whispering/singing every time the chorus came around.

6. Laura Mulvey theory

This is a link to my Haiku Deck PowerPoint which summaries the main points of the Laura Mulvey theory.
Below are the 2 videos that I feel give the best understanding of Laura Mulvey's theory on representation with a short explanation.

I feel this video is a good understanding of Laura Mulvey's theory on representation. I feel this because here Nicki Minaj is seen as a 'dismembered' woman. This is because the camera often focuses on her body parts such as her small waist, boobs and bum. The video is trying to send across the message that women are just objects to the male gaze which fully supports the Mulvey theory on representation.
These images are screenshots from the Anaconda video which support the Laura Mulvey theory on representation that all women are dismembered and are not focused on as a whole. It also shows that women are just seen as objects in media to a male dominating society.

I also think Laura Mulvey's theory works well for Katy Perry's California Gurls because from the video, the audience can clearly see that the image of the artist has been carefully planned out. The audience are able to see that the choice of clothes have been picked specifically for the theme of the song and video. Her hair and attire in general has also been chosen especially for the purpose of the song. This is helpful because as an audience we will now follow this representation and this will help us to become familiar with the type of artist and genre we are looking at from the video.
Both the images back up Mulvey's theory that artists clothe choices and prop choices are very carefully planned out in music videos.

8. Review of favourite previous student video
I decided to choose the cover music video for Krept & Konan's Other Side
I really like this video throughout. It looks very professional (for a college student student video) and I'm impressed at the seamless use of camera and editing techniques. Whilst watching the video, I never felt bored or unengaged, because so much seemed to be happening all the time, and it was filmed at so many angles it looked very dynamic and fast paced, which i guess goes with the grime genre this song partially fits in.
The first actual shot is very clean - the boy is seen at a close up, then the camera moves across a tree trunk - to see the boy at a long shot, walking a different way. I almost didn't see this because it was such a swift action of the camera. There is also a lot of camera transition as it shifs to black and moves on to the next scene/clip, which I also think is a good technique, as it suggests "Meanwhile".
The thing that made me believe this was going to be a successful video was when the boy throws the flowers on the gravestone, the camera moves very quickly up the grey pavement up to the next artist's face, because it looked purposeful and well thought through even before they started shooting.
My second favourite part of the music video was probably the therapist scene. The filter looks very cinematic and serious, because everything seems to be one monotone/depressingly dark colour, which puts emphasis on the narrative of the clips: he is in need of counselling dealing with the loss the lyrics talk about. Also, it is filmed in a way that doesn't just make it look like people messing around in their house, because filming in your house doesn't always come out the way you imagine, and may look very silly and undirected, however this is filmed professionally and there are some really good angles here too.
The characters' costume also fits very well with the theme. I don't think their clothes were necessarily 'depressing', but it was what connotations the audience would associate those colours with. I liked how the therapist character's nails were black too. They remind me of a raven, or a crow's beak, those types of birds foreshadow death and despair, which goes really well with the song (even if it wasn't intentional).
My final favourite thing is the end, when the camera tilts up, that down to see the singer in the middle have a change of outfit, which matches the other two artists beside him. This is a really cool camera trick, and it kind of looks like a magic trick, even though it's obvious how they achieved this effect. It really grabbed my attention, because, obviously, I wan't expecting it. This is one of the base tracks I favoured the most because the faded look of it reminded me of a serious drama (film), which I've always favoured. Maybe they used some kind of colour-grading tool, but it looks the most professional, in terms of the use - or actually lack - of colour. In this part of the song, I also really liked how they cut the clips accordingly, to fit the songs beat, compared to the almost cliff-hanger part of the song when the camera is slowly tilting up to the sky.
Overall, I really like this music video because it gives me inspiration for the music video we are going to produce for a2 media.
